Brushing our teeth with toothpaste has been a hygienic and social necessity for ages. Removing bacterial bio-film or plaque, that builds upon our teeth every 12 – 24 hours; in turn, preventing tooth decay, gum disease as well as bad breath is the supposed role of brushing. No one can think of leaving the house without brushing unless, of course, they ran out.

But what is in that toothpaste that we so willing put in our mouth each day? And can these kinds of toothpaste really do what they claim to do? These are 2 of the most important questions that deserve further comment.

There is no doubt that brushing is necessary for healthy teeth and gums. It is a fact that even prehistoric men cleaned their teeth using grass which was like an early form of dental floss. But do we really understand what in our toothpaste make them work? Well, you might not delve in the ingredients of your toothpaste compared to your food or other personal care products, but remember those small dollops on your toothbrush twice a day do add up. While you brush your teeth with your favorite toothpaste, the ingredients in it enter your mouth which is the gateway to all the systems in your body. Thus, you need to be careful while choosing a toothpaste. Most of the toothpastes that you use contain questionable ingredients which must be avoided.

This is why it is always better to use organic or herbal toothpaste. When you do not flinch while avoiding harsh chemicals in your food, cosmetics then why not for your mouth or your teeth? Your mouth is the gateway to your body; why risk it? Don’t worry, you do not need to stop using toothpastes as that is not a desirable option. But what can be done is opting for natural alternatives. Natural toothpastes are made by using ingredients like mint and other herbs, that help you eliminate bacterial activity in the mouth while making fragrant your natural breath. These natural toothpastes are not like soap for the teeth, the way normal toothpastes are. Most of the cleaning of your teeth is done by brushing. Toothpaste is just a product that helps to eliminate bacteria in the mouth naturally.

Hence, natural toothpaste is a healthier alternative to the usual chemical toothpaste that we so fondly use. These days when we are all busy in reducing the chemical components in our day to day products then opting for herbal toothpaste is indeed a wise choice.
